In the U.P. of Michigan in the 60's with Grandpa.
Welcome to my website. I'm Randy Nelson, and I've been gathering antique lures and old fishing tackle for more than 20 years. I live in northwest Indiana, a region that could almost be called the birthplace of the fishing tackle industry in America since the early 1900s. Many of the biggest lure makers were based within 200 miles of my home, so it's no surprise that I grew up around so many of the curious old lures and baits that collectors treasure today.
I've fished my entire life and was raised in a fishing family. When vacation time came, there was never any doubt it would be a fishing trip. I'm grateful my family raised me that way and left me with so many warm memories of fishing days gone by. Those days have passed, but the memories return whenever I pick up an old fishing lure or another piece of nostalgic tackle. As a boy, I would dig through both of my grandfathers' tackle boxes with wonder and amazement. I suspect some of those old curiosities still linger in my mind and keep pushing me to seek out these remarkable works of art and ingenuity.
My first find was an old tackle box I bought at a local auction more than 25 years ago, packed with cool old lures and other curiosities. I took them home, started handling them, and the rest is history. I had caught the antique lure collecting bug!

My Grandpa Candy spent his free time on the banks of the Tippecanoe River in north central Indiana with his friends, running trotlines and giving me some of the most memorable fishing experiences I can recall. He was known as the king of the trotlines. As a small boy, those big old catfish looked big enough to eat me. His tackle box was always stocked with all kinds of Heddon River Runts, his favorite lure, along with many others, and he spent countless hours trolling and casting them for bass and pike.
My cousin and I were lucky enough to join some of these amazing fishing trips and spend time with him and his friends on the Tippecanoe River. I'll never forget running trotlines full of huge catfish splashing and thrashing in the bottom of the boat. I lost my Grandpa far too early, but I'm so thankful for the fond memories he left me and for helping shape the fisherman and person I eventually became. |
